AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs: A Guide to Safe Exfoliation

Exfoliating acids are some of the most powerful ingredients in skincare today, and also some of the most misunderstood.

When used correctly, they can smooth texture, brighten dull skin, unclog pores, and improve the appearance of fine lines. When used without guidance, they can disrupt your skin barrier and lead to irritation, sensitivity, or unexpected breakouts.

At Chateau Glow, we often see clients using multiple acids at home without fully understanding how they work together or whether their skin actually needs them.

Let’s break down the truth behind AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs - and how to use them safely.

What Are Exfoliating Acids?

Exfoliating acids are chemical exfoliants. Unlike physical scrubs that manually remove dead skin, acids dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more evenly and gently.

There are three main types you will commonly see in skincare:

  • AHAs

  • BHAs

  • PHAs

Each one works differently and targets specific skin concerns.

AHAs: Best for Dullness and Visible Aging

AHA, or alpha hydroxy acid. These are water soluble acids that work on the surface of the skin.

Common examples include glycolic acid and lactic acid.

AHAs are ideal for:

  • Dull or uneven skin tone

  • Fine lines and early signs of aging

  • Dry or sun damaged skin

  • Rough or textured skin

Because they work on the surface, AHAs help brighten and smooth the complexion. However, they can increase sun sensitivity, which makes daily sunscreen essential when using them.

At home tip:

Start slowly. Using AHAs one to three times per week at a lower concentration is usually enough. More is not always better. Overuse can weaken your skin barrier and cause irritation.

BHAs: Best for Acne and Clogged Pores

BHA, or beta hydroxy acid. The most common BHA is salicylic acid.

Unlike AHAs, BHAs are oil-soluble. This allows them to penetrate into pores and dissolve excess oil and buildup from within.

BHAs are effective for:

  • Acne prone skin

  • Blackheads and clogged pores

  • Oily or combination skin

  • Inflamed breakouts

Because they target congestion at the pore level, BHAs are often recommended for clients who experience recurring breakouts or have oily skin.

At home tip:

If your skin tolerates it well, you may use a BHA two to four times per week. Monitor for dryness or peeling, especially if you are also using retinol, other active ingredients or prescribed topicals.

PHAs: The Gentle Exfoliating Option

PHA, or polyhydroxy acid. These are considered the gentler alternative to AHAs.

PHAs work similarly to AHAs but have a larger molecular structure, which means they penetrate more slowly and are less likely to irritate sensitive skin.

PHAs are suitable for:

  • Sensitive skin

  • Rosacea prone skin

  • First time acid users

  • Skin that reacts easily to stronger exfoliants

They gently refine texture while supporting hydration, making them a great starting point for those new to chemical exfoliation.

How to Use Exfoliating Acids Safely

No matter which acid you choose, safety comes down to balance.

1. Avoid Layering Actives

Combining multiple strong ingredients like acids, retinol, and high-strength vitamin C at the same time can overwhelm your skin, causing dry skin and flakiness.

2. Protect Your Skin Barrier

If your skin feels tight, shiny, stings easily, or becomes unusually reactive - pause exfoliating products and focus on hydration and barrier repair.

3. Wear Sunscreen Daily

Exfoliating acids increase sun sensitivity. Daily SPF is essential to protect your skin and maintain your results.

If you are unsure whether your skin is experiencing irritation or purging, simplifying your routine is often the safest step.

When to Choose Professional Exfoliation

At home, exfoliating acids can support your skincare routine, but they are not a replacement for professional evaluation and treatment.

At Chateau Glow, every facial begins with a skin analysis performed by our esthetician. This assessment allows us to understand your skin barrier health, sensitivity level, current products, and specific concerns before selecting the right exfoliation approach.

Professional treatments allow for:

  • Customized acid strength based on your skin condition

  • Controlled application with proper timing and neutralization

  • Combination with extractions, hydration, and calming steps

  • Real-time monitoring to reduce the risk of irritation

Instead of guessing which acid to use or how often to apply it, at Chateau Glow we analyze your skin before your treatment and build a treatment plan around what your skin actually needs.

Sometimes the most effective approach is a balanced combination of professional exfoliation and a simplified home routine that protects and strengthens your skin barrier.

AHAs brighten, BHAs clear congestion, and PHAs gently refine.

Understanding how they work and using them properly can transform your skin - but proper assessment makes all the difference.

If you are unsure what your skin needs, start with a professional skin analysis at Chateau Glow and let your routine be guided by expert insight rather than trial and error.

Your glow should always be healthy first!
