Chemical Peels 101: What to Expect

Chemical peels often get a bad reputation. Many people imagine dramatic peeling, days of hiding at home, or skin that looks worse before it looks better. The truth is, modern chemical peels especially the ones offered at Chateau Glow are far more gentle and customizable than most people realize.

If you’ve been curious about chemical peels but unsure if they’re right for you, this guide breaks down exactly what they are, how they work, and what to expect before and after your treatment.

What Are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a professional exfoliation treatment that works by breaking down the intercellular glue holding dead skin cells together. Once those dull, damaged cells are released, the skin naturally sheds them, allowing fresh, healthier skin to surface more quickly.

This process speeds up the skin’s cell turnover rate, also known as CTR, which plays a key role in improving texture, tone, breakouts, and signs of aging.

And here’s a surprise for many first time clients:

You don’t actually have to peel to get results!

Visible flaking is not required for a peel to be effective. In fact, most of the peels offered at Chateau Glow are superficial, meaning they work on the outer layers of the skin with minimal to no downtime.

What Concerns Do Chemical Peels Address?

Chemical peels are incredibly versatile and can be tailored to target a variety of skin concerns, including:

  • Acne and congestion

  • Post acne marks and discoloration

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Rough or dull texture

  • Fine lines and early signs of aging

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Folliculitis and acne prone skin types

Because no two skins are alike and the health and safety of your skin, the specific peel used is always determined during your appointment.

Who Should Avoid Chemical Peels

While chemical peels are safe and effective for many skin types, they are not recommended in certain situations. A thorough skin analysis is always essential before treatment.

Chemical peels may not be suitable if you are currently experiencing or have recently had any of the following:

  • An allergy to aspirin or salicylic acid

  • Pregnancy or currently trying to conceive

  • Recent or current use of Accutane

  • Recent laser facials or laser hair removal in the treatment area

  • Active cold sores or viral infections

  • Broken skin, open wounds, or compromised skin barrier

  • Active sunburn or significant recent sun exposure

If any of these apply, your esthetician may recommend postponing your peel or choosing a facial treatment instead. At Chateau Glow, our team prioritizes skin safety first and will always guide you toward the best option for your skin at that time.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

A chemical peel appointment at Chateau Glow takes approximately 30 minutes and always begins with a thorough skin analysis. This allows your esthetician to assess your skin’s current condition, sensitivities, and goals before selecting the most appropriate peel for that visit.

For clients who have never had a chemical peel before, an enzyme peel is typically recommended as the starting point. Enzyme peels gently prep the skin, allowing it to respond better to stronger exfoliating acids in future sessions.

Enhancements are available to elevate your treatment, including dermaplaning as an add on, as well as finishers that help soothe and support the skin post peel. A post peel kit is also provided to guide your home care and protect your results.

Because everyone’s skin reacts differently, chemical peels are not recommended if you have an important event within 4 to 5 days of your appointment. While most clients experience minimal flaking, the level of visible peeling can never be guaranteed. If timing is tight, a facial treatment may be a better option.

The Chemical Peels Offered at Chateau Glow

At Chateau Glow, chemical peels are never one size fits all. We work with two professional skincare brands, Image Skincare and Face Reality, allowing us to customize treatments based on your skin type, concerns, and comfort level.

All peels offered in studio are superficial peels, meaning they work on the outer layers of the skin to deliver results with minimal downtime. Most clients experience little to no visible peeling, making these treatments ideal for maintaining healthy, glowing skin year round.

Image Skincare Peels

Image Skincare peels are formulated with soothing ingredients and are designed to support a wide range of skin types and concerns. These peels are often chosen for clients looking to improve overall skin quality, brightness, and texture while keeping the skin calm and balanced.

Depending on your skin’s needs, Image Skincare peels may help with:

  • Dull or uneven skin tone

  • Fine lines and early signs of aging

  • Mild to moderate discoloration

  • Rough texture or congestion

  • Skin that needs a gentle reset

For clients new to chemical peels, Image Skincare options are frequently used as an introduction to professional exfoliation. They provide noticeable improvements while respecting the skin ba76rrier, making them a great starting point or maintenance treatment.

Face Reality Peels

Face Reality peels are specifically designed for acne prone and congestion prone skin. These peels are ideal for clients dealing with active breakouts, post acne marks, or skin that is easily inflamed.

Face Reality peels may be recommended for those experiencing:

  • Persistent or recurring acne

  • Clogged pores and congestion

  • Post acne discoloration

  • Folliculitis

  • Oily or combination skin types

These peels are selected carefully based on your skin’s tolerance and acne history. Strength is always adjusted over time, allowing the skin to build resilience while minimizing irritation.

Why You Don’t Need to Peel to See Results

One of the most common misconceptions about chemical peels is that visible peeling equals better results. In reality, peeling is simply a side effect, not a requirement.

Many clients experience little to no flaking after their treatment and still see improvements in brightness, clarity, and texture. Skin renewal is happening at a cellular level, even if it isn’t obvious on the surface.

This is why chemical peels at Chateau Glow are safe to incorporate into a long term skincare plan rather than reserved for extreme correction only.

When Will You See Results?

Many clients notice subtle improvements after just one peel, such as smoother texture or a brighter complexion. However, chemical peels work best when done in a series of 3 or 6 treatments, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Clients with pitted acne scars should expect to complete at least three sessions before seeing noticeable changes. Consistency is key when it comes to skin remodeling.

Post Treatment Expectations and Aftercare

After your peel, it’s normal to experience mild redness or slight swelling, which typically resolves within 24 hours.

Some clients may experience light flaking or shedding two to four days post treatment, while others may not peel at all. The amount of visible peeling does not determine the effectiveness of your results.

If flaking occurs, it’s important not to pick or peel the skin, as this can lead to irritation or post inflammatory pigmentation.

What to Avoid After a Chemical Peel

  • First 24 to 48 hours: Avoid wearing makeup

  • First 48 to 72 hours: Avoid heat and perspiration, including exercise, saunas, and hot tubs

  • First 4 to 5 days: Avoid active ingredients such as exfoliating acids, retinoids, and prescribed topicals

  • First 7 days: Avoid picking, peeling, facial hair removal, and excess sun exposure

Following these guidelines helps protect your skin barrier and ensures the best possible results.

Is a Chemical Peel Right for You?

Chemical peels are one of the most effective ways to refresh the skin, treat stubborn concerns, and support long term skin health when done correctly. With professional guidance, proper preparation, and post care, they can be a powerful addition to your skincare routine.

If you’re unsure where to start, booking a chemical peel at Chateau Glow allows your esthetician to guide you toward the best option for your skin, safely and thoughtfully.
